Carole Renouf
Carole Renouf’s career spans over 20 years in the non-profit sector. Graduating with an MA Hons in English and a Diploma in Education, she spent her early years teaching at secondary and tertiary levels in Australia and Europe. A growing interest in the health field led her into health education, initially with NSW Health where she set up the first Australian national conference on HIV/AIDS and healthy lifestyle resources for seniors. This was followed by the establishment of her own consultancy, with clients and jobs as varied as producing corporate materials for Textile Industries Australia and stories for the Series 6 of the hit science and technology program, Beyond 2000. Subsequently, Carole joined the Australian Consumers’ Association (publishers of CHOICE magazine and www.choice.com.au), initially as a journalist and then as a senior policy officer and media spokesperson. Carole’s policy specialisation was food and health and during ten years with the ACA she led the consumer campaign against genetically modified food and pioneered the first Australian consensus conference, which saw the establishment of the gene technology regulator.
Carole was recruited from the ACA to WWF Australia. With no prior experience or training in fundraising, she was asked to introduce a major gifts program in her first year, and subsequently promoted to Director of Marketing and Communications. In this national role, Carole and her team grew the WWF database from 20,000 to 60,000 over three years, through face to face fundraising and direct mail. A short stint at the UNSW as Director of Development for the Science Faculty was followed by five years as CEO of the Garvan Research Foundation. During this time, Carole and her team grew annual fundraising for the Garvan Institute of Medical Research from an average of $3m to $15m, largely through major gifts from individuals. Carole was also asked to initiate the capital campaign to raise $110m to build the Kinghorn Cancer Centre adjacent to the Garvan. In two years, working closely with the Chairman of the Institute, Carole successfully completed the campaign, raising $40m in philanthropic gifts to complement a $70m capital grant from Government.
In Dec 2010, Carole took up the position of CEO of the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The NBCF currently raises $17m per year, principally through corporate partnerships and community fundraising.
